I'm trying to put together a mix of sorts, but it's currently running a bit thin. Basically, the idea is songs about heroes or soldiers, preferably without a pro-war slant. Things I'm looking for: The atrocities committed by soldiers. Children being sent off to war. General anti-war sentiments. Stories involving soldiers, but not directly related to war itself. Things I'm not looking for: Jingoistic/hippie shit. Here's a list of songs I've already found to give an idea of what I'm looking for: Ministry - Hero Sol Invictus - Heroes Day Scott Walker - Hero of the War David E Williams - Beautiful Brown Shirted Man Pink Floyd - When the Tigers Broke Free The Zombies - Butcher's Tale Tags: mix, music Current Location: My apartment, but not for much longer Mercy?: Exhausted You don't DESERVE mercy.: David E Williams - Stench Number Seven

First, for those of you not currently downloading Doctor Who: The third season starts at 2000, Friday July 6th on SciFi. Martha (the new companion) is better than I expected. She's no Rose, of course, but she's good. The writing's also a hell of a lot more consistent than in the second season. Second, there's now a teaser trailer for FALLOUT 3! It's. Fucking. Fantastic. The music? The Ink Spots. The graphics? All in engine. I am still reserving judgment to a certain extent, but, well. Yeah. Just watch it. http://www.gameplasma.com/previews,id,1537,previewid,277.htmlThird, read the latest installment of The Pain, and pay close attention to Cheney's parasite brain. http://www.thepaincomics.com/weekly070606a.htmTags: doctor who, fallout 3!, the pain Current Location: 1337 Massachusetts Ave Arlington Heights, MA 02476 You don't DESERVE mercy.: Young Marble Giants - Wurlitzer Jukebox

I'm writing this to you from my balcony. The wind chimes sound softly as the sky is briefly lit in rosy hues. Sunset is my favourite time of day. At my side are a handful of books, a glass of iced tea, and a lighter & pack of cigarettes. I've started writing a bit, in an attempt to move beyond my problems with it and to get ready for my eventual return to school. Work is going well, I have a plan in place to get out of debt, I've started losing weight, and I've started to make a friend. Those last three are all only small steps, but they feel good. I think Spring & Summer here are going to be very good, even if I continue in my semi-hermitlike existence. For a brief moment, I am content. I still smoke too much, have odd (minor) injuries, and still have bouts of crippling, bone-crushing despair, but these are things dealt with easily enough. In the upcoming weeks I'll be looking for a voice teacher & language tutor (Russian, German, Italian, or Japanese), and in June I'll begin applying to Harvard for a job in one of their libraries. On Wednesday I'll be going to a European games night at Pandemonium Books, with the dual purpose of playing some games and perhaps making a few acquaintances. Thursday I'll be attending the premiere of On Broadway. Following that will be a Q&A with Eliza Dushku, the director, and perhaps Will Arnett and a few others. On Saturday, I'll be seeing Beach Party at the Threshold of Hell, a post-apocalyptic dark comedy with zombies. Both of these films are part of the Independent Film Festival of Boston. Jonathan Coulton and Paul & Storm will be playing at Johnny D's on May third; this is the same place they performed at when I saw them in December. It was quite fun then, so I hope to be able to see them again. Fast forward to July 12th, Tool will be performing in Boston. I'm hoping to convince Anthony to come see them with me. If 10,000 Days is any indication, it promises to be an incredible show. I suppose I don't currently have much else. For now, I hope you are all doing well. To those of you still in Binghamton, here's to a timely escape. With Love, Hate, and a Healthy Sense of Misanthropy, Samuel Tags: life, movies, music Mercy?: Overheating. About new Who: It's still too soon after Rose. Not only is The Doctor batshit insane, he's a bit of a prick. We really don't need to know about Martha Jones' wacky (read: fucking irritating) family. I've heard of identical twins, sure, but identical cousins? STOP WITH THE FUCKING EARTH. We have both Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures to deal deal with weird happenings on Earth. Doctor Who should be about other planets. The Doctor's half-smile near the end makes up for the rest of the episode. It's still not as good as the first season of the new series. And it's still too soon after Rose. Tags: doctor who

1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me." 2. I respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better. If I already know you well, expect the questions may be a little more intimate. 3. You WILL update your LJ with the answers to the questions. 4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the post. 5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.Questions by Baka Usagi: 1. Have you ever wanted to trip a child wearing those roller-skate/sneaker shoes while passing them on the street?Doesn't everyone? I mean, just think about the gravel. 2. Are you a fibber?Sometimes, sure, but not nearly so often as a certain someone else. 3. If you could turn into any land animal, what would it be and why?The sn humanark ca kitlerlls to m rabidnorthamericanfangirle... Probably a perpetual (housebroken, of course) kitten. Why? Their boundless energy, of course. 4. Turn your music on and hit shuffle... What's the first song that's playing?"I Lost My Heart at the Fairground" by Glenda Collins. 5. Have you ever had an experience with something/someone spiritual? (e.g., a ghost, table moving across a room, etc.) If so tell me about it!I thought so when I was younger, but I really just have a rather vivid imagination and irrational dislike of fog and mist. Questions by Kevin: 1. What, in your opinion, should a player get when he passes "Go" in Kirk Cameron's "Way of the Master" board game?A handful of Chick tracts, a banana, and a guide on how to make the banana demonstration as homoerotic as possible. 2. KNIFE FIGHT - Alan Moore vs. Warren Ellis. Who wins? There's no way it would be anything but an extremely dirty fight: Ellis has his cane, but he needs it to stay mobile. He also has a weakness against furries. Moore's weak against ducks and bad film adaptation, but he has the whole mountain man/crazy magician thing going on. Then again, Ellis also has his holy slut army. Moore is going to end up dead no matter what, whether it be at the end of Ellis' knife, or at the hands of his army, enraged by the death of their leader. Either way, the world loses. 3. What was the last concert that came to this area that made you truly excited?Probably GWAR, but the only time I was truly excited for any concert was the first time I saw NIN, which was also my first real concert. 4. Have you purchased and/or watched Gayracula yet?'Fraid not. I can't even find a place to download it, let alone purchase it. 5. Superboy Prime has punched the walls of reality. Who is the new ruler and master of the Earth? Note - you can't choose yourself. The world will kneel before Zod. Tags: meme Mercy?: Am I still sick? You don't DESERVE mercy.: Troum - Skaun[ei]s

H.P. Lovecraft: A Life (1996) by S.T. JoshiI first discovered Lovecraft when I was 9 or 10, and his work has been colouring my life ever since. I read the biography of him by L. Sprague de Camp when I was 11 or 12, and while it was a fascinating piece of work, I have over the past couple of years found out that it was both an inaccurate and amateurish piece of work. S.T. Joshi is possibly the foremost Lovecraft scholar, and has done much to correct the damage done by August Derleth (who-- though he has to be recognised for publishing Lovecraft's work, and keeping it published--is to blame for the abominable "Cthulhu Mythos" and the many misconceptions of Lovecraft) and de Camp's poor biography. Joshi corrected the texts for what are probably the definitive versions of Lovecraft's fiction and has written many criticisms and essays on Lovecraft, including the fantastic Annotated Lovecraft. This 700 page biography is widely considered to be the best account of Lovecraft's life outside of his own letters (which, sadly, will probably never be published in full). I would of course, prefer it in hardcover, but that runs 375$ or more. The Ancient Track: The Complete Poetical Works of H. P. LovecraftI have to admit that I tend to dislike reading poetry, but this is Lovecraft, and his poetry has always fascinated me. Also, it's been compiled by S.T. Joshi. Falling Angel by William HjortsbergThe movie Angel Heart is based on this. Angel Heart is one of my favourite horror and noir films ever made, and the book it's based on is said to be even better. Unfortunately, every attempt I've made to read it up to this point has been thwarted. The Minuteman Library Network (which is an entry all on it's own) had a copy in its system, but when I tried to reserve it the book ended up being missing. Most book stores I've gone into to look and/or ask about it have it listed as out of print and also being re-released in November. At this point, Amazon is the only one that claims to have it in stock. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. On a completely different note, Portishead's "Sour Times" from their live album PNYC is one of the best trip-hop songs ever recorded, and indeed, one of the best songs ever recorded, period. I found out something fantastic today. There is a movie called Gayracula. I want to own it. Just imagine throwing it on when Mormons or Jehovah's Witnesses come to your door. Also, I've ponied up the 79$ that I don't have to go to Brainwaves. It's Friday, Saturday and Sunday this weekend, but you can pick up a day pass for 29$ if you can't do all three days. The Dresden Dolls will be preforming on Friday evening, along with z'ev (interesting percussive music, for what little I've listened to), Troum (excellent quieter drone scapes), Nadja (ambient doom metal? the clips I've heard are interesting) and Edward Ka-Spel and Silverman (no idea about Silverman, but everything Ka-Spel touches is at least a little bit psychedelic). Saturday and Sunday are both listed under schedule on the website, along with links to the performers' websites. There will also be music videos between performances. How many of you watched Happiness of the Katakuris? More importantly, how many of you want the soundtrack? I'm here for three days, and already there's (albeit minor) drama. Prior to my moving in there were three roommates - David, Christian and Christopher. There had been a fourth, but she left suddenly, forfeiting her security deposit and leaving a whole bunch of furniture behind (to my benefit). I was brought in by David through my brother. They were also looking for a fifth roommate, but because I was first I got pick of the two rooms. I chose the smaller of the two rooms because it had a balcony (there'll be a post some time soon about the room and balcony with photos) and was going to be cheaper than the other once a fifth roommate was brought in. Enter fifth roommate (I haven't met her yet). She's being brought in by Christian and also seems to want to smaller room. Apparently there's been some sort of communication gap between David and Christian. I've spoken to David about it. If it's a question of rent, I'm willing to make the rent equal for the two rooms. If it's a question of the balcony, I'm not about to prevent anyone's use of it. And if it's a question of moving in (the smaller room is on the second floor and the larger on the third) I've offered my services. I'm hoping this is all just a non-issue. Finally, if you're looking for a new keyboard and mouse, avoid this piece of shit at all costs. This entry has taken nearly twice as long as it should have because the space bar sticks terribly.
